In the business of mortgage there are different sub-jobs. A loan officer is the one that is in charge of helping customers obtain a mortgage. Mortgage processors are in charge of getting the documentation together and verifying that same documentation from the loan officer. They are also responsible for sending the application in. Mortgage underwriters take the application and decide whether or not to approve it. An escrow officer handles transactions between lenders and consumers.
Jobs in the area of mortgage require at least a bachelor’s degree. Areas of concentration should be in accounting and business. To work as any mortgage officer, it is important to possess the ability to speak with customers professionally, problem solve quickly, have exceptional math skills, and use company software accordingly. Having prior experience working in the mortgage field is considered a plus, but it is not necessary.
