Exercising has become one of the most effective means to treating depression. Because of this, exercise physiology is a career field that is great for individuals who want to help others treat their depression, and help themselves in the process.

An exercise physiologist takes the time to get to know their patients first. They find out all the necessary information about their family life, relationships, and sources of depression. From there, they can start to get an idea of what type of exercises are going to be the most helpful for their client. There may even be times when group exercise programs can be beneficial methods of treatment.

Skills needed for this type of job position will include:

  1. Stamina. Since you will be learning what benefits your clients best, you will need to be able to keep up with the exercise programs that you choose for your clients. The hours can be long and programs may be rigorous, so be sure you are up to the challenge of keeping up with your clients.

Give Recreational Therapy A Try

Recreational therapy is another great way for individuals to give care to those that are suffering from depression. In this form of therapy, most clients are patients who are suffering from some sort of injury that would impede their normal every day activities. The recreational therapist takes the time to study each of their patients. They look into the original source of the injury, including how and when it may have happened, so that they can get an idea of what type of physical exercise their patient can actually perform during therapy. It goes well beyond just looking into the injury though. Recreational therapists also make a point to look into different methods of helping their patients overcome their depression at the same time.

The top skills needed for a position as a recreational therapist are:

  1. Problem Solving. Working with depression patients who are suffering from it because of an injury is a bit trickier than with other depression treatment methods. There are a lot of problems that arise when you have to pay close attention to what your patients can and cannot do in order to physically overcome depression. You will need to have a sharp mind to understand the problems your patients face and know exactly how to solve them through your therapy.
  2. Professionalism. While this is a given skill that is needed in this field, it is especially important for recreational therapists. Patients are happy to have someone who is motivated to help them and seem genuinely interested in helping them. However, patients also need to feel that you are a professional when it also involves trusting that you will help them in dealing with their injuries as well.
  3. Organization. Organizing different programs for each patient and keeping track of their progress is absolutely necessary in this field. You need to know exactly what the status of each patient is when they are performing certain therapy programs so that you will understand how to proceed or know which programs will benefit them in the best way possible. This incorporates professionalism and problem solving by showing that you are paying close attention to the achievements of each patient and fixing problem areas with patients as well.
