Best Jobs for Individuals with Anxiety

Anxiety is the most common mental illness in the United States. Over 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety, whether that be general or social anxiety. The severity of anxiety is very case specific, but in many cases it can be debilitating, making it hard to hold down a job. So what are some career paths that might be more conducive for those who are battling with anxiety and even depression caused by anxiety? Again, every individual is different and anxiety affects individuals differently so there is no perfect recipe for success, but here are some jobs that are proven to be less stressful for those with anxiety. 

  • Stay at Home Mom (if applicable). Many moms can have anxiety being away from their children, perhaps staying at home and working online, remotely might be more conducive to your lifestyle. 
  • Dog Trainer. Dogs have been scientifically proven to help alleviate anxiety and depression. Perhaps being around dogs all day is exactly what you need to stay out of a bad head space. 
  • Accounting. Accounting had a ton of structure involved as how to do things. For many, structure is comforting and can help alleviate anxiety related symptoms. 
  • Entrepreneur. If you are the controlling type, and there is nothing necessarily wrong with that, then entrepreneurship might be best for you. Be your own boss, be in charge, and feel comfortable with how you can control situations and outcomes. 
  • Therapist/Counselor. Many people find comfort and alleviated stress in their own lives when they can focus their attention on someone else's life and take the emotions out of it. This requires a great deal of schooling, but would pay it forward in the long run. 
  • Nanny. Nannying is a high paying job that is fairly easy, depending on the child. You basically get to play all day long, therefore allowing you to feel less anxious and more comforted. 
  • Writer/Artist. Expression of thoughts and emotions is encouraged for those with anxiety or depression. If you are the creative type, and many with anxiety are, this could be therapeutic as well as profitable. 
  • Computer Programmer. Computer programming is something that can be done in the comfort of your own home and on your own time. Another very structured career path that might provide comfort to certain individuals. 
  • Cosmetology. Similar to being an artist, this can be a creative expression. Plus, you make people feel good about themselves and the way they look. People also tend to treat their hair stylists or makeup artists like therapists too so you get a little bit of everything. 

No matter what you do, anxiety is going to be a struggle, but finding a way to manage or alleviate symptoms will greatly contribute to your quality of life as well as your career.
