When you are a teenager, it can be extremely difficult to find a job, but nevertheless you need one. Maybe you need to save up for a car, or maybe you need to save for college, either way, there are many ways you can make money in your teens. While almost all jobs you have in your teens and even early 20's are placeholder jobs, it is important to start your job history young, and here's why:

  • Employers typically aren't as impressed with your education as they are your work history. Kids who have never had to work a day in their life until they graduate college are having a hard time finding jobs in this economy and job market, and if they do find a job, it is absolute culture shock. So develop a good work ethic young, that will shine brighter than anything else.
  • Internships are also a great thing to do in your teens, whether paid or unpaid, the benefits of making these connections and building rapport will behoove you in the long run.
  • "Put in your time" with a job that you might not ideally like. You've heard of this before, and it is true. Unless you are extremely lucky or have the best connections in the world, you will most likely have to put in your time in placeholder jobs to get yourself by, building that resume and completing your education.

So what are some jobs that you can do in your teens that can help you save money or start that job history? Well sometimes it can be hard to find a job that will hire a young kid, so perhaps in the early teens you can look to babysit, dog walk, pet sit, trim lawns, any kind of service you can offer, you can technically create your own business out of. Go around your neighborhood and see what the needs are and we're sure you can make a pretty penny this way.

So what about first "real" jobs that aren't under the table? Some great first jobs for teens are:

  • Babysitter
  • Hostess
  • Movie Theater Employee
  • Busboy
  • Landscaper
  • Caddy
  • Food delivery
  • Lifeguard

All of these jobs do not require a great deal of experience and can help you save the money you need. Looking for some extra spending cash? Try opening an Etsy account and selling things that you make or have on hand.
