About Maintenance Careers

Maintenance workers are responsible for the maintenance and repair work for businesses and homes, depending on their employer. Workers can specialize in a variety of fields, including plumbing, landscaping, and home repairs. Maintenance jobs can be obtained through companies such as Mr. Handyman, or can be hired for specific buildings, such as working on the maintenance staff for a school.

What to Expect

Maintenance workers are typically required to have a high school diploma or GED and a lot work experience. Typically workers will start out with an apprenticeship or helper job shadowing a more experienced maintenance worker in order to learn how to do the job. Opportunities to be promoted are available in this field as well, including working as a manager or supervisor. Oftentimes a certificate of competency in maintenance professions or a 2-year or 4-year college degree are required for these positions.
