Kmart is a discount store chain that was founded in 1962; today it is the third largest chain of its kind in the world, behind Kmart and Target. There are locations throughout the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. In 2005, Kmart was acquired by Sears. Recent reports indicate that there are more than 1300 Kmart stores in the chain, including regular chain discount stores and nearly 30 Kmart Super Centers. Kmart became popular for its surprise sales occurring throughout the day, called "Blue Light Specials."

What to Expect When Interviewing

The majority of applicants that interview for a position with Kmart report a positive interview experience. Potential employees can expect a fairly straightforward interview process consisting of a face-to-face and/or group panel interview, in which a skills test and a personality test are given. A standard interview question might include, "Tell me about your work ethic." Potential employees can apply online or in person, and phone interviews are sometimes conducted prior to the face-to-face interview. Some applicants who are offered positions can expect to submit to a background check.

Sales Associate

As a Sales Associate you will be responsible for: selling and servicing customers within one or more departments, including Hardware, Lawn & Garden, Electronics, Cosmetics & Fragrance, Footwear and Fine Jewelry; maintaining knowledge of products and using this knowledge to assist and educate customers on options available; providing customer assistance; and delivering a positive customer shopping experience. In general, pay for jobs in this category is based on a fixed hourly rate of pay plus potential commissions based on sales; however, the compensation structure may vary by department or store.

Cashier

As a Cashier you will be responsible for providing excellent customer service, efficiently and accurately completing sales and service transactions at the cash wraps, as well as handle customer issues that may arise on the sales floor.

General Warehouse Associate

As a General Warehouse Associate you will be responsible for the expedient and accurate handling of merchandise into and out of the warehouse facility. Some essential duties include the unloading and stocking of incoming merchandise, loading of outbound trailer, checking, verifying, & auditing of merchandise as received and identifying, separating, labeling of merchandise to enable relocation to appropriate area within the Distribution Center.

Loss Prevention Associate

As a Loss Prevention Associate you will be responsible for providing excellent customer service, protecting company assets through activities in safety, inventory recovery, and internal and external theft. Loss Prevention associates assist with reduction of loss of inventory, time, and assets, monitors surveillance equipment, and apprehends shoplifting suspects.

Assistant Store Manager

As an Assistant Store Manager you will provide “World Class” Customer Service by surprising and delighting Kmart customers every day. You will assist the Store Manager in managing the store including establishing priorities, following up to, and supervising store associates. In addition, you will work with direct reports and other coaches in order to ensure the implementation of corporate merchandising, operations, and human resources programs and directives. Assistant Store Managers control expenses and work to reduce expenses when possible. They follow up on all asset protection procedures to reduce invisible waste. Review operations of license departments (i.e., footwear) for optimal service and sales.
